Kali’s hard lesson

Kalinormasa Comes Into Her Own

Kali was so ready to go home.   She vaguely understood the need to go to the outlying tribes who still lived old ways, when allegiances or new warriors were selected, but she found travel dull. and because some dumb recipe swapping, they were nearly last. They were passed by lessor retainers and the rear guard was waved on as the wagon slowed on the last rise before the valley ahead. There was compensation this time. She was bursting with pride to be allowed to ride dual with the real outrider of the small wagon her younger brother, his nursemaid and some of the weaker servants who could not ride and that herb-witch. She wished she was older! Her brother Ferro was now no longer at the children’s table, though still planning his manhood ceremonies; which were much funner than womanhood. That would be soon enough.. almost 4 years. What she really wanted, was her warrior ceremony someday, most of all. She watched every nuance and move of her father when they sparred. She had surprised several opponents in children’s training with her deceptive litheness hiding considerable strength. Her father often sparred with her personally after she had tried to “borrow” his great axe. Though clumsy at the time and it being so large to lever, she had made a few swipes at the target and it seemed to amuse him. She wanted him to have pride in her as a warrior. It was all she thought of when she wasn’t looking for adventure, often against order.

It “was safe enough” she overheard the older women speaking in the wagon, since “with this retinue, no bandit with wish for life would be seen for miles”.   She frowned but acceded that excitement would be bad with so many helpless servants, the North Speaker’s concubine, and craftsmen and the diplomat. She heard the signal and turned around, they were stopped.. a problem. The cart beast had favored a foot and balked. The drover and his guard were checking. It would be 30 minutes.. to remove the stone and let foot pain fade since no damage done. The Herb witch decided she would walk at hillside to gather any of the local tribal herbs before out of their growing area. While the drover took the offending stone from the beast’s foot, the outrider, worried at how far the caravan already was from them decided to make signal from a point up on hill top. The important passengers were only reason he was erring for caution, after all, they were only 8 miles from the village. He signaled the other guard and told Kali in condescending tone, “And you princess, can keep watch in case anything comes up the road and call us with this war horn”.

Ugh! the boredom radiated from the very earth and she rolled her eyes. Along a sheered rock face of the hill, they picked special lichens, in seeming moments a guard bellowed, heard faintly from the ridge; “We can see the entourage, it wont be long now. We just need to make a small fire for signal mirror.”” But they are already very far ahead, so we may need to go to the village for overnight”

Kali made a petulant face that her brother and his nursemaid noticed “oh.   . . joy.” A coal black mitt pressed on her hand and she looked into the cherubic face of her baby brother. “No be angry Kali. Poor beast not like foot owie.*whispered* And Nurse say ugly face stay on forever.” As she smiled at him, the noses wrinkled of nursemaid, brother, and herbwitch.   The non minotaur servants didn’t notice. A breeze change brought an offensive odor. “Phaghhhh something dead is near!” There was a shout and a cracking noise. Closer shouting. Free? Fleas?

From around a formation the larger minotaur flew as a javelin and the outrider hit an outcropping with a sick thud before sliding down. All were alert as a mighty roar claimed, “I eet gud tonit!” and a huge figure came around and fastened its beady dull gaze on the picking party.

A MOUNTAIN TROLL!?

Her brother was new focus and it said “Snack!” As it approached the women fell apart.” None of us are warrior or as mighty as that Guard there perished! We are doomed! We shall all be slain!” cried the Herb-witch. With the second largest party member stating this, the elven wailed and the human blubbered, all falling to their knees. The only warrior left was ..*gulp* Kali! Her heart quailed for dropping sand. The defeated posture of the women and fancy elf man. The disappeared drover. It was looking bad. Something came over her like a hot wind. It was up to her! Quickly she put the little boy and the small girl of the elven servant on her pony. To stop his tears and focus him she barked, “You are strong.. protect her. Do not let Swiftwave leave the road.. yank her hard if she seems to but other wise keep slapping her to run, she will hurry to catch the herd since she is afraid. STAY on the ROAD!” At she hit the mare hard with the drover’s crop to make it bolt the right way. Like a bullet they were over the rise and on way “TELL FATHER HURRY!” She screamed in the wind to them.

************

Kali could not be a true warrior and shepherd of her people, if she left these helpless ones to simply walk in the monsters mouth in despair. Mortality was still a ethereal term to her at her age, danger a word with consequence but flirted with often. She had not seen death on the battlefield yet, though had helped wounded. As she called its attention away from the bolting horse by hitting it in head with a goblet, and taunted it away from the huddle of squalling victims under the rock sheer; its true size could be judged. Her courage faltered a breath. She wished hard that she was bigger.. it was much bigger than father, one of the largest minotaurs! Wasn’t there something she should remember about his stories.. ?     Whoa.. close! distraction almost was her downfall early.

“Get me my sword! I will protect you .. my word of honor I shall! No monster shall make a meal of those under my protection ! I am Kalinormasa! I am the Star of the Night and daughter of COBAL! And I am no one’s meal!”

One of the panicked had presence of mind to hear and comply. Dodging and evading, an opportunity opened and she skewered the beast in chest, in triumph. And then he stood straight .. lifting her by her grip on the hilt.. HOW? she thought utter let down and worry .. it has not gone deep? the skin is like armor! That was the story of her father! She started to jump away and she realized she could not pull it free. As she tried a tug, a huge hand contacted her. A snap of metal, a thump and all the constellations passed before her eyes. This is it then?

No, NO! NOoooo! she could not succumb so soon , the fate in store at her defeat was too gruesome to bear. The ground was unrelenting in its crush when she hit. A sick feeling, pain, a crack. ‘My… arm…’ she thought foggily. ‘I am too small … too small… they that whisper are right.. I am unworthy!’ It’s shambling steps approached though foggily seen and it laughed, “I EET yuu first”!   A wailed, “Princess NO! Watch Out!” caused it’s head to swing around and the beast trained its bloodshot eyes on the panicked nurse. Deep inside Kali screamed, she gnashed her teeth. Not like this, it wasn’t supposed to be like this, she wanted him to be proud.. Cobal. She wanted his gaze upon the scene of her death to at least show she was worthy! She suddenly thought about what death would really mean.   ‘No! I will not go this way!’

Unconsciously drawing on her life force and something intangible that was rising like a fire inside, she dulled the pain, and realizing what happened, wishing she had not ignored her mother. If she lived she would learn to manipulate that which her mother Ari called ‘mana’ ; no lesson would be played sick from ever again.  She threw the loose boot of the crumpled guard at it. Satisfaction was hearing the ringing metallic thunk. “I am the most tender here! If you can take me!”, she shrieked, taking a calculated risk she laid as if helpless as it rushed towards her.. covertly slipping the broken sword along her broken arm so the other arm was ready to steady it. As he loomed, he laughed, “mebbe ay luv yu and then eeet yu! Harhahah!” and leaned to bite her face like some true animal, she sacrificed her arm to the action. Sabre teeth perforated the already pained arm and she howled. But then the beast stood …. trembled .. and howled! The small broken sword was jammed in his mouth and stabbed up into his nasal cavity. there would be no biting in this fight now! Drawing strength she took her eating dagger and kept ruining and slashing.. many many places to bleed, including hamstring.. anything to make it less strong to chase everyone when they fled at her death. Father would not make it in time. It would be her end. But by the dark depths, she would make an accounting!

Her whole world focused into the dance of death that was battle. She had romanticized the term… but now… she understood. If she got her talisman, she could be popped to her mother now, a small fearful part, the terrified child she still was, reminded her. But then the servants would surely perish horribly. And she promised. Her thoughts focused past the ever overflowing reservoir of rage and energy. Her mind was flying as she looked for solutions.. any equalizer. He was so tough, so big. She had not the strength to pierce him. Her despair deepened as she thought over fact that it had strength of all the beings here combined.

It. Had . Strength.   It…

She was knocked flying as distraction again gave it a opening. she slid across the ground, arm agony of fire, pelt scraped away like apple peel with tears flowing of frustration. She bumped into the outrider. ‘ was he indeed dead?’ and her eye fell on his lanceman’s spear. Large and sharp iron.. long and almost too heavy. She wiped her blood on the tip for resonance.. a plan coalescing. She knew alone it could make no impact on the monster… but if fire was added, a focus to follow….. she could reach for its life to use against it. It could work if she had enough focus. She scrambled up with the polearm … hitting the tip on a horny, calloused, hairy foot as she bolted to the rock face. “OBEY your Liege! RUN to the Road FOOLS!” She roared at the petrified audience, and satisfied they were finally galvenized to motion, she again she feinted and angered it til it chased her headlong and ran to put her back to the rock face .. butt at the ground and her height as its fulcrum and prayed to the dark goddess of her father and the moon goddess of her mother and the powers of all the warriors before her. She would likely die when it recovered, but maybe it would be winded enough wounded enough to allow the rest to escape. As she looked up her thought was ‘The sky... is so blue…..’

His huge hand grabbed her, by doing so he slid the heavy lance that was prepared wit her blood so she could push her mana as his strength pierced it deep into his gut before the angle snapped it and with a howl fell on her. And it was not dead? True despair roiled within her heart. It rolled off and howled more in wordless agony. It fell on its back trying controting to dislodge the deadly piercing that nicked his heart. ‘This is it.’ she thought. ‘When it staggers back it shall crush me and dismember me’. She had not even a tear for herself. Only a sad acceptance.

A commotion barely caught her ear as she staggered to meet it and try to battle longer. It started to waver to it’s feet, but looked as if to …run away? Her name was bellowed by a strong voice as the shrieking panicked din of the servants was overridden. A boom of arcane. Her father! The servants were saved. She had fulfilled her promise! “FATHER!”

He approached swiftly, asking if she was all right and started to herd her back to the road, like a Banty hen hovered over. “GIVE ME ROOM!” She could not see or hear, the nether roared past her feet up to the sky taking all sound and the light blazed down and burned her to blindness. “I did good..right .? I am the daughter of COBAL and I kept my word. Their lives are under my protection…..” in sad hope she asked him and she collapsed .

((*** add Cobal’s part on coming upon this. he can bout her fading strength and deaden her pain, even try repair though her mother would be better at the skill)
